Tony and I ventured today to the camel racing track. We were so excited to see so many camels this time. Tony gave me the courage to actually turn the car into the track area and drive around. We kept thinking, "are we going to get arrested?" See, you have to picture that the only cars out there are land cruisers and they are obviously the owners of the camels because they drive close to the side of the track next to certain groups of camels.
And then there we were in our Dodge Durango little SUV with a camera hanging out the window. Let's just say we stood out. A lot. But we went for it and drove the entire circle of the huge race track (you can't actually see even close to all the way around the track it is so big. We were driving along the area where, in a real race, the land cruisers drive and control the robot jockeys. It was really cool. Most the the camels were just trotting along getting exercise, but we saw a few running at faster speeds.
Next we tried to find the oryx farm that is nearby. It turns out that it is gated and you have to come with a tour company to see it. Oh well, we took a picture of the sign instead.
Then we went to Aspire park. It is a huge park with a pond, bridge, playground, running loop, and tons of green space. The weird part is, signs are posted all over saying No BBQ, no playing ball sports, no biking, no swimming. Such a waste of beautiful space if you can't even kick a soccer ball around with your kid there.
I remember the camel trip well! Did the riders make any jesters to you to turn around when you went next to the track? Looks like Tony has gotten to enjoy a lot of what Qatar has to offer!
