Dhow festival

Last weekend we took the kids to a Dhow festival.  This is a festival of wooden boats that are used to pearl diving and fishing throughout the middle east.  We got to climb on all the boats, go for a boat ride, eat yummy crepes with nutella in them, and see a military demonstration that was really cool.

I don't know if I have written about everyone's fascination with Avery yet, but here is an example of what I mean.  I stood Avery there with all the boats in the background to take her picture.  This man, who is likely from Oman based on his dress, stopped and asked to get in the picture.  They all love this blondie and want to take pictures with her all the time (even if it is just my camera).  The funny thing is, if this happened in America, I would freak out and think the guy was a pedophile, but here, the people genuinely love children, especially ones that look so different and are so sweet to them.  It is all very innocent and I am thankful to be living in a place without such worry.

Before the people in Gulf found oil and natural gas, Qataris relied on pearling as their main source of industry.  This man was showing off his beautiful salt water pearls.  The funny part about this picture is right after I took it, all the kids hopped on this boat.  The old man wasn't paying attention and Bobby and I were switching around cameras because my phone died.  Next thing we know, we look down and all the kids are scooping their hands all through the pearls.  The man notices and freaks out a little saying "no touch!" "those are real!"  Luckily, none of the kids dropped or lost any of them!
